APUSH FEBRUARY RECESS ASSIGNMENTS

Hello, APUSHers:

Hopefully, you are staying warm and enjoying the snow. In an effort to let everyone get a jump on their February Break Assignments (FBAs), I am posting them a little early. Please note the due dates are staggered, so everything is not due when you get back from vacation on the 22nd. I have also included an opportunity for a GEM project that can be used as a full test grade (4.0 scaled points).

The assignments are as follows.

If you didn't complete the chapter 25 Quiz, or the Civil War/Reconstruction Examenito, you must complete it by Feb. 22nd, or the grade will be recorded as a ZERO. If you completed these assignments, you obviously are not responsible for doing them.

2. FREE RESPONSE ESSAY: Due Date 2/22/2010. This is a MANDATORY ASSIGNMENT! EVERYONE MUST COMPLETE THIS ONE! Will be graded as a full test (4.0 scaled points)! Here is the task that you must complete for this essay:

Your essay must be typed and printed, or neatly handwritten (in blue or black only, on looseleaf paper). Minimum length 750 words (two pages).

If we do the GEM webquest do we have to do part 2 where we have to get pictures and do a small scrapbook?

Well, that would be going the "extra extra" mile. It would be nice if you did, but it is not necessary.

CHAPTER 27:
1. America was bursting with industrial growth and numerous factories. Many industries and factory owners looked beyond the borders to expand their production. Thanks to the immigrants, newfound wealth, and mass production America needed overseas market.

2. Queen Liliuokalani didn't want to annex Hawaii but Americans insisted that the best way to overcome the McKinley Tariff ( a tax on Hawaiian products) was to annex Hawaii to the United States. Cleveland refused because when he sent a spy to investigate the situation the result was that not everyone in Hawaii was ready for annexation.

3. Cuba had revolted against Spain after Spain had mistreated them for many years. Cubans torched their sugar cane fields in hopes that such destruction would either make Spain leave or America interfere.

4. Dewey had defeated the enemies without losing any of his men. He waited for reinforcements instead of charging in on the islands.

5. The "Rough Riders" were a group of American volunteers formed to fight at San Juan Hill in Cuba. Many of them were cowboys, ex-convicts, and other rugged men. Colonel Leonard Wood led the group, but Theodore Roosevelt organized it. They were named "Wood's Weary Walkers" because by the time they got to Cuba to fight, most of their horses were gone.

6. America couldn't give it back to Spain after those years of misrule and they didn't want to just take it like an imperialistic nation.

7. By doing this they eliminated immigration hurdles.

8. In the Insular Cases, the Supreme Court barely ruled that the Constitution did not have full authority on how to deal with the islands (Cuba and Puerto Rico), this gave Congress the authority to do whatever it wanted with them. The island residents do not share the same rights as Americans. They had sent General Leonard Wood and Walter Reed to help get rid of yellow fever. The Platt Amendment became their constitution.

9. America was declared as world power and it only lasted 113 days.

10. President McKinley formed a Philippine Commission in 1899 to deal with the Filipinos, and in its second year, the organization was headed by William Howard Taft, who developed a strong attachment for the Filipinos, calling them his “little brown brothers.”

11. The Boxer Rebellion is when they revolted and took over the capital of China, Beijing, taking all foreigners hostage, including diplomats.

12. The Americans tried to assimilate the Filipinos, but the islanders resisted; they finally got their independence on July 4, 1946.

13. They worried about Americas imperialistic ways and if Bryan became president, he would shake up the prosperity that was in America at the time; McKinley won easily.

14. He had a motto that says speak softly and carry a big stick. He meant let your actions do the talking.

15. Such a waterway would also make defense of the recent island acquisitions easier (i.e. Philippines, Puerto Rico, Guam, Hawaii).

16. Roosevelt Corollary, which stated that in future cases of debt problems, the U.S. would take over and handle any intervention in Latin America on behalf of Europe, thus keeping Europe away and the Monroe Doctrine intact.

17. His mediation of North African disputes in 1906 through an international conference at Algeciras, Spain, TR received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906.

18. The showdown came in 1906 after the San Francisco earthquake when the city decreed that, due to lack of space, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean children should attend a special school. To impress the Japanese, Roosevelt sent his entire battleship fleet, “The Great White Fleet,” around the world for a tour, and it received tremendous salutes in Latin America, New Zealand, Hawaii, Australia, and Japan, helping relieve tensions.
