APUSH Regents Week TAKE HOME MID-TERM

Hello, APUSH'ers:

As you may be aware, next week begins Regents week for HS students.  To that end, HS classes will not be in session.

While classes may not be conducted, this is by no means a vacation.  There will be an assignment for this class during Regents week.

You will have a take-home midterm exam.  The exam will be structured exactly like a US History/Government Regents exam.  It will be based on the material we've covered from 1825-1865; from the age of Jackson to the Civil War.

You will be responsible for completing
1. Multiple Choice questions
2. Thematic Essay
3. DBQ Short Answers
4. DBQ Essay

Normally, you have three hours to complete this exam, in one sitting.  You will have from now, until Wednesday, January 30, to complete it.   Additionally, you have your notes, as well a host of materials on-line.  Look below to a link for some really good stuff!

All APUSH students will receive an email containing the materials for the exam.

You will be responsible for turning in
1. The multiple choice answer sheet (included in email)
2. The Thematic/DBQ Essay
3. The DBQ short answers.  You may elect to complete the DBQ's on looseleaf, or directly on the documents themselves.
4. Rubrics for both essays.

CLICK HERE for a list of excellent resources!

Please make sure all work is STAPLED, and SIGNED by a parent.

Good Luck.

Extra Credit Assignment - The Donner Party

Background: Three years before the Gold Rush, 87 pioneers took a shortcut westward to California, only to get caught in the snows of the Sierra Nevada. The emigrants' fateful journey culminated in death and cannibalism.

Watch the Movie Here!

Answer the questions based on the movie.  Your answers should be at least ONE (1) paragraph in length for you to receive credit.

WARNING:  If you are squeamish, and easily "grossed out," it is strongly advised that you DO NOT watch this movie!

Here are the questions...

1. What reasons led James Reed and George Donner to take Hastings’ Cutoff? Why was their decision unwise?
2. What other factors contributed to the failure of their venture?
3. Was Lansford Hastings to blame for what happened to the Donner Party? How?
4. What traits did members of the Donner and Reed families possess? Support your answer with examples from the film.
5. How did people in the 1840s view the American West? How did the story of the Donner Party help to strike down the myth of frontier idealism?
