1. How did the growth the industry and large factories shape the charatcter of the American city ?

Large factories and the growth of industry brought up many job opportunities for Americans, and immigrants. Tenements were also a big factor. There were sometimes three to four families cramped into a space barely suitable for one family. People who were working class and poor back then were basically the same.

2.How did the improved transportation: railroads; streetcars (etc) impact character of the American city?
Transportation brought the nation together and allowed for more connection and communication among people. It alllowed for goods such as meats to be transported and sold around the country. Automobiles and electric trolleys allowed people to move quickly from business districts to residential neighborhoods, which led to expanded city limits and the development of the suburbs.

3. How did increased immigration (and immigrants) shape the character of the American city?

Increased immigration meant that the unwanted jobs in factories that were low-paying and often very dangerous were given to immigrants.

4. How did architectural changes: skyscrapers (etc) shape the character of the American city ?

This just meant more room for buisnesses and workers to do their jobs in a more convinient way.

5. How did electric lights for commerical purposes shape the character of the American city ?

Electricity allowed for factory lights and machines to be on longer, and for the factories to be opened longer, which probably led to longer hours for workers.

6. How did urban planning shape the character of the American city ?

Urban planning meant more factories and big buisnesses, and less farming and agriculture.

7. How did tenement housing shape the character of the American city ?

Tenements were a site for poor americans. They were often dirty, and very cramped. A tenement that was occupied by one family was soon divided between three to four families.

8. How did political machines shape the character of the American city? Personalities to reference: William "Boss" Tweed, George Washington Plunkitt, and Thomas Nast.

Political machines meant more corruption in cities. Boss Tweed was convicted for stealing between 40 million and 200 million dollars from New York City taxpayers through political corruption. Plunkitt became wealthy by practicing what he called "honest graft" in politics. All in all, political machines weren't very benificial to American cities.

The tenement housing somehow benefited the immigrants but the owners actually didn't seem to care about the people, but the money. Many immigrants were able to live in a place and they would be able to socialize with others in the tenement houses. But the conditions of the tenement were bad and the immigrants were treated pretty bad.

8. How did political machines shape the character of the American city? Personalities to reference: William "Boss" Tweed, George Washington Plunkitt, and Thomas Nast.
The political machines and its leaders were actually kind to the citizens in their cities and supported them with money. But later on, they would end up taking the money from the citizens discretely taking advantage from them. They would corrupt the elections or manipulate it and somehow take money from citizens. Boss Tweed made a whole lot of money through politic corruptions.

DONNA WYLIE

1. the growth of large factories attracted many immigrants and gave them work. now that immigrants were working in these factories they needed to live close by their jobs so tenements were eventually established and "ghettos" with over 4,000 people on one city block! also some jobd and industrics were ethnically divided (from the video) so if one group of people were in one indistry then that enthnicity had to live in the same area (they had to live close-walking distance to their jobs before the invention of the streetcar)this also created ethniclly divided communites that would later create their own schools, newspapers, etc. another thing is that factories were becoming taller and bigger, which increased the land value.

2. before the invention of the streetcar, workers had to cram together on city blocks so that they could be within walking distance, this caused very, very crowded cities and blocks, but after the streetcar invention, "street cities" came about. also street cars and other mass transportation segregated workers by income. the middle/upper class people moved to streetcsr cities to get away from crammed, crime filled polluted cities. when these people left they made room for the poor-which were immigrants to move in their spots.

3. increased immigration to cities greatly affected cities. when immigrants arrived to th e U.S they often came with no money in their pockets, and knew no one that could help them so they stuck with their own kind. immigrants created distinct ethnic communities where they often practiced their own culture's traditions, langiage, religions, etc.

4. architectural changes like sky scrapers annd buildings also helped shape our cities. as skyscrapers grew outward they also grew taller. this increased the value of land and construction now became characterized by trying to build taller and taller buildings. with this new style, by 1900, steel framed skyscrapers and tall buildings were taking over and replacing churches, etc. and cities bcame "known" for the look of skyscrapers.

5. electric lights for commercial purposes shaped cities, for example New York is known as "the city that never sleeps" before advanced inventions and electricity was popular cities, i can predict were extremely dark at night, and all factories, shops, etc. probably closed around a set time. also from electric lights factories would be able to open longer, calling for more work.

6. urban planning helped create suburban cities, and changed crammed, tenement filled blocks into a comfortable lifestyle, for example a suburb was characterized by a single-family house with a lawn in front, soon, by 1900 suburbs became popular in almost every major city.

7. tenements were very, very crowded spaces that often immigrants stayed here, they also rarely had windows or proper ventilation. disease and sickness bombarded tenement houses, and were eventually the cause of settlement houses. reformers provided social services and care for immigrants, and people living in the neighborhoods, that were living in such poor conditions. settlement houses such as the hull house, taught english to immigrants as well as arts, music. so, tenement houses led to settlement houses-that lessened the suffering and homelessness of immigrants and the poor, which became popular in cities, and there were over 400 in big cities.

8. lastly, political machines shaped cities. political machines like boss tweed knew how to properly manipulate people- especially immigrants by helping them find jobs and apartments, they would even give them food baskets when they were going through hard times. they would also secretly take money from citizens. political machines like boss tweed, and thomas nast also added corruption and political turmoil to cities which would only continue to grow with cities.

8. Boss Tweed stole 40 to 200 million dollars from New York taxpayers using political corruption! Plunkit would buy land and sell it for an unreasonable price. He called it "Honest Graft" but, it was really political machinary. And Thomas Nast drew pictures to convince AMericans to believe what he believed.
