1. Some factors that influenced the development of the city are population, education, immigration, jobs, and urbanization.

3. The social networks were social, political, and economic. They were developed for immigrants to feel more at home and for them to make america more like thier homes.

5. Immigrant workers made extra mney by working longer hours and doing specific jobs correctly at Ford's factory.

Factors that lead to the development of cities were population growth, immigration, the creation of skyscrapers, and new technologies being created and developed.
2. What was the percentage of people living in 1890 who were "foreign born?"
The percentage of people living in 1890 who were foreign born was 87%.
3. What was the purpose of the "networks" as discussed in the video?
The purpose of the "networks discussed in the video were so that people with similar eithnic backgrounds could communicate with each other and be together. They could help each other out and they could be easily classified.
4. Identify THREE ethnic groups that lived in Washington Heights in the 1900s.
Three ethnic groups were greek, armenian, and jewish.
5. HOW did immigrant workers at the Ford Factory earn extra money?
Immigrant workers at the Ford Factory earned extra money by working overtime and doing specialized work on specific parts.
6. Describe life in the Tenement Apartments.
Life in tenement apartments was very bad. Everything was close together, the space was very limited, and the conditions were terrible.
7. How did the growth of transportation lead to the growth of the suburbs?
The growth of transportation lead to growth in the suburbs because now people were able to go from one place to aother quicker. For example, through trains etc. Also, now with these new systems, it was alot easier to transport goods.

The Chicago Fire took place in 1871.
9. Why was pollution considered a "positive thing" in the 19th Century?
Pollution was considered a positive thing in the 19th century because it meant that there was a lot of production going on, and also meant that factories were doing their jobs.
10. Imagine you were teaching this course . Provide a brief description of a political machine.
A political machine is like an organization with an authoritve leader and people who support them. Their main goal was to make moey.
11. How did Political Machines lure immigrant voters?
Political machines lured immigrant voters because immigrants viewed them as a way to have voting and political power.
12. How much money in kickbacks was earned during the construction of the Tweed Courthouse?
During the consruction of the Tweed Couthouse, I think around $6mil was made in kickbacks.
13. What was the "ten percent waste rate?"
I dont really know....
14. What was the purpose of the department store window displays?
The purpose of the department store window was to attract people to these new stores and also to teach the people what to look for and how to shop. This was a new thing introduced to people and the displays were a way to attract people.
15. Discuss and explain why Amusement parks were important.
Amusement parks were so important because they were the alternative to the bard lives people would had every day. People would leave their hard days of work and struggles to go have fun at an amusement park. They would escape their lives in the tenements and feel free to have fun, let go, etc...

A major factor that influenced the development of the cities is the Industrial Revolution. As teachnology got better, it increased the amount of factories and industries that required more workers. The immigrants had to work in cities because that's were the jobs are offered. Therfore, more immigration from different countries was accepted which changed the American society.

According to the video, ther is about 87% of the population in Chicago, 84% of Milwaukee and 80% New York were from other countries.

3. What was the purpose of the "networks" as discussed in the video?

The networks back then is similar to 'facebook' now. It allowed immigrants to stay in touch with their families and other immigrants that came from the same country.

4. Identify THREE ethnic groups that lived in Washington Heights in the 1900s.

The three ethnic groups that lived in Washington Heights is the Armenian, Irsh, Jewish, and Geek.

5. HOW did immigrant workers at the Ford Factory earn extra money?

If the immigrant doesn't speak English, they get $5 if they learn how to speak & write in English.

6. Describe life in the Tenement Apartments.

Tenements were filled with the lower classes that can't afford houses. The living conditions were extremely poor and space was limited. Americans have to pay unreasonable prices to live inn the tenement and often families are squished together which creates a uncomfortable area.

7. How did the growth of transportation lead to the growth of the suburbs?

As transportation increases, it tranformed urban areas to suburbs because the increase of labor for immigrants. As immigrants populated the area, it changes.

In 1871, the Chicago Fire happened.

9. Why was pollution considered a "positive thing" in the 19th Century?

Pollution was considered a "positive thing" as a sign of good economy and is known as a postive outcome of a healthy economy. But, later on, people started to realize that breathing in pollution is pretty bad.

10. Imagine you were teaching this course . Provide a brief description of a political machine.

Political machines are created by tricky and intelligent Americans. They bribed taxpayers/towns people to vote for them and in return they are offered jobs and housing. Therefore, many people vote for them. These Americans have the power to collect taxes after elected but instead of putting the money into the town, they put it in their own pockets.

11. How did Political Machines lure immigrant voters?

The Political Machines gave the voter goods such as housing or a job if they voted for them because back then, jobs were getting harder and harder to find.

12. How much money in kickbacks was earned during the construction of the Tweed Courthouse?

Kickbacks for the Tweed Courthouse went up to 5 million dollars.

13. What was the "ten percent waste rate?"

The "ten percent waste rate" is that people working for cleaning streets, running the police, and city jails where paying 10% too much. This means that the government that acted as if they are helping the poor, actually isn't.

14. What was the purpose of the department store window displays?

The store window displays is to attract costumers into buying their product. During the growth of the city (beginning from 1880's), people became more happier in shopping then ever before.

15. Discuss and explain why Amusement parks were important.

Amusement parks provided an area to "escape" from the daily life of cities which wasn't the happiest place. Amusement parks brought excitment to people.

Some factors that influenced the development of the city are population increase, education, immigration, jobs, urbanization and transportaion.

Around 80-87%

3. What was the purpose of the "networks" as discussed in the video?
The purpose of these networks were for newly arrived immigrants to feel more at home and for them to get to know one another better.

4. Identify THREE ethnic groups that lived in Washington Heights in the 1900s.
Jews, Germans and Polish

5. HOW did immigrant workers at the Ford Factory earn extra money?
They earned extra money by working longer hours, and doing jobs efficiently.

The transportation made it easier and faster for people to go back and forth from work. They were able to move farther out of the city and still be able to work in the city without city pressures. Where would people be if the 7 train wasn't there.
