Tonight's HW 12/8/08

Hello, APUSHers:

Here's tonight's Assignment:

1. READ AND OUTLINE 96-101. If you've already done this, consider this time to review.
2. COMPLETE the Document Based Assignment below. It might be a good idea to print out the document and highlight key information.

Directions:
In the document below, Patrick Henry outlines a powerful dissent to the new federal constitution. Read the document carefully, recognizing that the language of the eighteenth century was greatly differently in many respects from the language of the twenty-first century. You may need to read the document several times, underlining specific words or phrases that are not clear to you. After reading the document, answer the questions that follow.

"...I need not take much pains to show, that the principles of this system, are extremely pernicious, impolitic, and dangerous. Is this a Monarchy, like England---a compact between Prince and people; with checks on the former, to secure the liberty of the latter? Is this a Confederacy, like Holland--an association of a number of independent States, each of which retain its individual sovereignty? It is not a democracy, wherein the people retain all their rights securely. Had these principles been adhered to, we should not have been brought to this alarming transition, from a Confederacy to a consolidated Government. We have not detail of those great considerations which, in my opinion, out to have abounded before we should recur to a government of this kind. Here is a revolution as radical as that which separated us from Great Britain. It is as radical, if in this transition our rights and privileges are endangered, and the sovereignty of the States be relinquished: And cannot we plainly see, that this is actually the case? The rights of conscience, trial by jury, liberty of the press, all your immunities and franchises, all pretensions to human rights and privileges, are rendered insecure, if not last, by this change so loudly talked of by some, and inconsiderably by others. Is this same relinquishment of rights worthy of freemen?..."

-Patrick Henry, Speech to the Virginia Ratification Convention, 1788

Questions:

1. What do the terms 'pernicious' and 'impolitic' mean? Why did Patrick Henry use such terms in describing the underlying principles of the eventual U.S. Constitution?

2. In what ways did Patrick Henry place the early American experience within both a) a recent historical context, i.e. to what prior events does he make reference and b) an international context, i.e. what comparisons did Henry make with other systems of governance?

3. In the document's final lines, Patrick Henry raises concerns about individual liberties and freedoms that he felt were endangered. In what way did the Federalists act to alleviate some of his concerns in the final phases of the Constitution's ratification process?

MR TESLER! OKEY DOKEY! here i am the first to comment because i am cool like that :)....(cooler than Opal because i pone her).
1) Pernicious means to cause harm, and impolitic means not wise. He uses these terms because he is (obviously) against the constitution. He thinks this because the constitution may endanger their rights and privileges as Americans.

2) Patrick Henry relates the constitution to Britain's kind of government, "a compact between Prince and People." He also asks if it is a confederacy, like Holland... He thinks that the constitution will give the government too many rights, so it will be as if they are ruling America like Britain did.

3) Patrick Henry says the the rights of conscience, trial by jury, liberty of the press, all immunities and franchises are insecure, and may be lost to the Americans. The Federalists agreed to have a bill of rights added to the constitution to alleviate some of the concerns...

By the way Opal, the first is ALWAYS the best... SO YOU LOSE!

Mr. Tesler, here's my wonderful Homework...

1. What do the terms 'pernicious' and 'impolitic' mean? Why did Patrick Henry use such terms in describing the underlying principles of the eventual U.S. Constitution?

The term pernicious and impolitic means that it is harmful or dangerous. Patrick Henry used those terms to describe the underlying principles of the eventual U.S. Constitution because he disliked the Constitution and he thought it was more harmful to the nation than anything else.

2. In what ways did Patrick Henry place the early American experience within both a) a recent historical context, i.e. to what prior events does he make reference and b) an international context, i.e. what comparisons did Henry make with other systems of governance?

Patrick Henry placed the early American experience within the recent historical text and the international context by comparing their government and other government. He also compares the government to the Great Britain.

3. In the document's final lines, Patrick Henry raises concerns about individual liberties and freedoms that he felt were endangered. In what way did the Federalists act to alleviate some of his concerns in the final phases of the Constitution's ratification process?

The Federalists, who supported the Constitution, thought the opposite of Patrick Henry. They wrote the Bill of Rights to alleviate some of his concerns in the final phase of the Constitution's ratification process.

1. PERNICIOUS MEANS TO CAUSE DANGER AND IMPOLITIC MEANS NOT WISE, LIKE GABBY SAID. PATRICK HENRY USES THESE TERMS BECAUSE HE IS AGAINST THE CONSTITUTION AND HE IS ARGUING THAT CREATING A CONSTITUTION IS NOT THE SMART THING TO DO BECAUSE IT WILL INFLICT DANGER TO THE COLONIES AND LOSE THEIR RIGHTS AS AMERICANS.

2. PATRICK HENRY RELATES THE CONSTITUTION WITH BRITAINS GOVERNMENT WHEN IS SAYS " COMPACT BETWEEN PRINCE AND PEOPLE," WHERE THE PRINCE REFERS TO THE ROYAL GOVERNMENT OF BRITAIN AND THE PEOPLE MEANING THE COLONIES. I ALSO AGREE WITH GABBY THAT HE THINKS THAT ADDING THE CONSTITUTION WILL GIVE THE GOVERNMENT TOO MUCH POWER AND RIGHTS AND THE AMERICANS WILL NOT HAVE ANY RIGHTS, JUST LIKE HOW IT WAS WITH THE BRITAIN RULING THE COLONIES IN THE EARLY YEARS.

3. WHEN PATRICK HENRY SAYS THAT AMERICANS WILL LOSE RIGHTS SUCH AS LIBERTY OF THE PRESS, TRIAL BY JURY AND THE RIGHTS OF CONSCIENCE, THE FEDERALISTS COME UP WITH THE BILL OF RIGHTS TO BE ADDED TO THE CONSTITUTION. THEY WROTE THE BILL OF RIGHTS, WHICH ARE THE FIRST TEN AMENDMENTS, TO ENSURE THE ANTI-FEDERALISTS WHO WERE CONCERNED ABOUT LOSING RIGHTS THAT AMERICANS RIGHTS ARE PROTECTED IN THE BILL OF RIGHTS. SO NOW, THE ANTI FEDERALISTS LIKE PATRICK HENRY COULD APPROVE OF THE CONSTITUTION.

1.Impolitic means not wise, and Pernicious involves harm. As Opal said, Patrick Henry used those terms to describe the principles of the U.S constitution. This was because he disliked the constitution. He didint think it was beneficial, but he thought it was actually harmful to the nation.

2. Henry asks if it is a confederacy, like holland. In addition, he predicts that the constitution will give the government too many rights. Then, he compares it when Britain ruled America. (Saying that it will rule America)

3.The Federalists supported the constitution. As a matter a fact, their thoughts were the opposite of Patrick Henrys thoughts. Furthermore, towards the end of the constitutions ratification process, the federalists decided to write the bill of rights to alleviate some concerns.

1. What do the terms 'pernicious' and 'impolitic' mean? Why did Patrick Henry use such terms in describing the underlying principles of the eventual U.S. Constitution?

Pernicious means to cause harm and impolitic means to be unreasonable. Patrick Henry uses these terms because he is against the Constitution and believes that their human rights and privileges will be taken away.

2. In what ways did Patrick Henry place the early American experience within both a) a recent historical context, i.e. to what prior events does he make reference and b) an international context, i.e. what comparisons did Henry make with other systems of governance?

He compares their government with Britain. They have won the revolution which was to escape the dictatorship of the British and now Patrick believes the U.S. government is doing the same thing.

3. In the document's final lines, Patrick Henry raises concerns about individual liberties and freedoms that he felt were endangered. In what way did the Federalists act to alleviate some of his concerns in the final phases of the Constitution's ratification process?

In order to alleviate some of Patrick's concerns, the Federalists decided to add the Bill of Rights, which listed each individual's freedom and liberties.

1. What do the terms 'pernicious' and 'impolitic' mean? Why did Patrick Henry use such terms in describing the underlying principles of the eventual U.S. Constitution?

Pernicious is something that is destructive or dangerous. Impolitic is basically something that is nothing like a ordinary politic would be like. Patrick Henry used such strong terms to decry the U.S. Constitution because it was literally destructive since it can harm America like a tyranny. And such 'tyrannical' powers are obtrusive that it's not so political and is more like 'tyrannical'.

2. In what ways did Patrick Henry place the early American experience within both a) a recent historical context, i.e. to what prior events does he make reference and b) an international context, i.e. what comparisons did Henry make with other systems of governance?

Patrick Henry related the Constitution's rules to the likes of British ruling before. Which was prior and was the tyrannical government type that British were using. He also says that it can be connected with Holland. Which means that the constitution is power overwhelming the government just like what the British did.

3. In the document's final lines, Patrick Henry raises concerns about individual liberties and freedoms that he felt were endangered. In what way did the Federalists act to alleviate some of his concerns in the final phases of the Constitution's ratification process?

Although the Federalists highly supported the Constitution, it wouldn't be ratified if there are many opposers. And in order to negotiate with their opponents, the Ferderalists basically added the Bill of Rights to make it seem fair to the Anti-Federalists and the opponents of the Constitution.

1. Pernicious means to cause damage or harm. He uses that word or term because he is agianst the constitution. He is against it because he thinks that the constitution would take away the natural rights.

2. Patrick Henry relates both British government and the American people as " prince and people compact".

3. The federalist agreed with what the constitution said and were againt Patrick Henry's thinking.

1. Pernicious means to cause harm and impolitic means to not be wise. Patrick Henry used these terms because he is against the constitution. He thinks that this will get in the way of the rights and privileges of the Americans.

2. Patrick Henry relates the constitution to Britain's kind of government. " COMPACT BETWEEN PRINCE AND PEOPLE," by the prince he means Britain and the people are the colonists. I agree with Monica that adding the constitution will give the government too much power and control and that would take away from the colonists rights and power. That is similar on how it was while Britain was ruling them in the earlier years.

3. Patrick Henry says the rights of conscience, liberties of the press, trial by jury, all immunities and franchises are insecure and the colonists may lose it. The federalists came up with the idea that the Bill of Rights should be added to the constitution, they wrote the ten amendments to make sure that anti-federalists weren't concerned bout losing their rights. Now the anti-federalists would like Patrick Henry and approve of the constitution.

*btw gabby i have owned you since forever so dont even try to pone opal*

and Mr. Tesler the first time i did the homework it was longer and better.

Hey!!

1. The term pernicious means to cause harm to something. The term impolitic means undiplomatic or in some cases stupid. Patrick Henry used these terms to describe the principles of the Consitution because from his point of view that is what is going on. He believes that the USA is has a very unstable government. He compares it to both Britan and Holland. Britan because the government has all the power, Holland because the individual states have all the power. There should be a distinction between the power the government has to the power the states have.

2. "It is as radical, if in this transition our rights and privileges are endangered, and the sovereignty of the States be relinquished" states Patrick Henry. He compares what is going on right now between the states and federal government- The American Revolution. He compares the USA- a mixture between Holland and Britan. Britan as a monarchy and Holland as a strong local government and weak federal government. As said in the last paragraph there has to be a distiction.

3. The Federalists enacted and issued what was called the Federalist's Papers. The papers tried to "convince" people not for the issuing of the Constitution. It gave them a better knowledge of what the federal and states governments could and couldn't do and the power each one had.

1. The term pernicios means to cause harm, and impolitic means to not be wise. The reason Patrick Henryused these terms to describe the underlying principles of the eventual U.S. Constitution is because he was against the constitution. He felt that instead of it helping the nation, it was harmful to it.

2. Patrick Henry relates the constitution to Britians kind of governtment. I agree with Monica, if you add the constitution, the government will gain to much power and control.

3. The federalists who supported the constitution felt the opposite of Patrick Henry. The federalist wrote the bill of rights, which listed each individual's freedom and liberties.

1. The word pernicious means harmful and impolitic means something not wise. Patrick Henry uses these words to describe the constitution because he is against it. He thinks it is taking righs away from the colonies.

2. Patrick Henry relates the contitution to Britains government. He states that it is not a compact between prince and principle. He thinks that the constitution will take a way the rights of the colonies the same way that the British did. He also related the constitution to a cofederacy like Holland.

3. Patrick Henry states that Americans will loose rights like the liberty of press, trial by jury, and the rights of conscience. The federalists came up with the bill of rights to be added to the constitution. The bill of rights guarenteed the anti-federalists that they weren't going to loose their rights. The rights of the colonies were now protected which is what the anti-federalists wanted.

2. Patrick Henry is relating the constitution to the British government and he also believes that the constitution will give the government too many rights and a lot of power.

3. The federalists that did support the constitution did not support Patrick Henry in any way and just let him pass on by.

1) Pernicious - to cause harm impolitic - not wise. The term is used because he is against the constitution because it may put American rights at risk.

2. Patrick Henry relates the constitution to Britain's government. He also thinks it relates to confederate nations like Holland. In his point of view, the constitution grants the government more rights and privaleges that they can use without damaging the rights of the American citizens.

3. Americans will loose rights like the liberty of press, trial by jury, and the rights of conscience states Patrick Henry. The federalists presented the bill of rights to be added to the constitution to guarentee anti-federalists that their rights were safe.

1. What do the terms 'pernicious' and 'impolitic' mean? Why did Patrick Henry use such terms in describing the underlying principles of the eventual U.S. Constitution?

Patrick Henry meant by 'pernicious' and 'impolitic' is that is can cause danger to the colonist, like EVERYONE ELSE SAID. Patrick thought that the U.S government was too similar to the government in Britian.

2. In what ways did Patrick Henry place the early American experience within both a) a recent historical context, i.e. to what prior events does he make reference and b) an international context, i.e. what comparisons did Henry make with other systems of governance?

Patrick Henry is arguing, asking the Americans, what's the point? What's the point of becoming independent from Britian if we are going to have the SAME form of government? He states that because of Britian's government, it's the reason why the Colonist are unhappy, theerfore, Patrick says that it is harmful and unreasonable.

3. In the document's final lines, Patrick Henry raises concerns about individual liberties and freedoms that he felt were endangered. In what way did the Federalists act to alleviate some of his concerns in the final phases of the Constitution's ratification process?

Federalists, pro-constitiution, obviously thought differently from Patrick. But, the federalist created an addition to the constition called the Bill of Rights to satisfly others like Patrick.

1) Pernicious means to inflict harm/danger, and impolitic means unwise. Patrick Henry uses these terms while explaining the principles of the Constitution because he is strongly against it. He is in fear that the Constitution will take away their [Americans] rights and privileges.

2) He relates America's government to Britain's. Patrick thinks the constitution will grant the government too many rights.

3) Because of this common fear, the constitution was edited. The Bill of Rights was was added to resolve this issue.
