Tonight's HW 12/17/08

Ch 7 Writing
The War of 1812 created a split within the United States. While many Westerners and Southerners, led by the War Hawks, advocated going to war with Great Britain, many New Englanders derisively called the conflict "Mr. Madison's War." A radical faction at the Hartford Convention even advocated nullifying acts of Congress, and perhaps even seceding from the Union.

Directions: Read the following documents and answer the essay questions that follow.

President Madison's war message, 1812

"British cruisers have been in the continued practice of violating the American flag on the great highway of nations, and of seizing and carrying off persons sailing under it, not in the exercise of a belligerent right founded on the law of nations against an enemy, but of a municipal prerogative over British subjects....Under pretended blockades, without the presence of an adequate force and sometimes without the practicability of applying one, our commerce has been plundered in every sea, the great staples of our country have been cut off from their legitimate markets, and a destructive blow aimed at our agricultural and maritime interests..."

"In reviewing the conduct of Great Britain toward the United States our attention is necessarily drawn to the warfare just renewed by the savages on one of our extensive frontiers--a warfare which is known to spare neither age nor sex and to be distinguished by features peculiarly shocking to humanity."

Hartford Convention, 1814

"First. Representatives and direct taxes shall be apportioned among the several states which may be included within this union, according to their respective numbers of free persons....

Second. No new state shall be admitted into the Union...without the concurrence of two thirds of both houses.

Third. Congress shall not have power to lay any embargo on the ships or vessels of the citizens of the United States...for more than sixty days.

Fifth. Congress shall not make or declare war...without concurrence of two thirds of both houses....

Seventh. The same person shall not be elected president of the United States a second time; nor shall the president be elected form the same state two terms in succession."

Essay Questions:

1. What reasons did President Madison give Congress for declaring War on Great Britain?

2. What changes in the Constitution did the Federalists of New England propose?

3. Did the Treaty of Ghent (1815) solve the problems Madison presented in his war message? If so, how were the problems resolved, and if not, what did the United States actually gain from the war?

2. What changes in the Constitution did the Federalists of New England propose?

SOME CHANGES THAT THE FRDERALISTS OF NEW ENGLAND MADE TO THE CONSTITUTION WAS THAT THE SAME PERSON COULDNT RUN AND BE PRESIDENT FOR MORE THAN 2 TERMS WHICH IS 4 YEARS EACH. THEY ALSO DECIDED THAT CONGRESS COULDN'T DECLARE WAR WITHOUT CONCURRENCE OF TWO-THIRDS OF BOTH HOUSES.

3. Did the Treaty of Ghent (1815) solve the problems Madison presented in his war message? If so, how were the problems resolved, and if not, what did the United States actually gain from the war?

THE TREATY OF GHENT DID HELP SOLVE THE PROBLEMS THAT MADISON ADDRESSED IN HIS WAR MESSAGE BEACUSE THE TREATY HELPED END THE WAR. MADISON WAS COMPLAINING ABOUT THE BRITISH CRUISERS ON THE AMERICAN LAND (AS ONE OF THE MANY THAT HE WANTED TO FIX) AND THE TREATY ENDED THE WAR THEREFORE ENDING HIS PROBLEMS. THEY WERE SOLVED BECAUSE THE WAR WAS NO LONGER ON SO THEY SIGNED A TREATY AND BECAME ALLIES (SORT OF) AND THAT MEADE THEM FOLLOW MADISONS IDEAS.... SUCH AS THEY HAD TO ABIDE THE TREATY.

yes somewhat because one reason why he daclared war was because they violated neurality laws and this treaty stoppes fighting, then again the treaty of ghent didnt mention any of the grienances that led to war. the was lso led to stalemate so neither britain of us recieved anything.

1. some reasons president madison gave congress for declaring war on britain was that britain was seizing US navy ships which violated US neutrality laws. so madison decided that war was neccessary since britain didnt respect US being nuetral and, like donna said, to keep US safe from britain.

2. the changes that federalists proposed in the constitution were that the president couldnt run for more than 2 terms(4 years each). also, congress couldnt declare war without the approval of 2/3 of both houses. another change was that no new state would be admitted unless 2/3 of both houses approved.

3. the treaty of ghent helped solved some problems that madison mentioned in his war message like britain violated their neutrality laws by seizing US ships. the treaty of ghent helpede stopped the fighting between US nd britain. but also the treaty didnt mention any grievances that led to the war and neither britain or US gained anything outof the treaty.

I believe that the treaty of ghent hepled end the war --> which meant that Madison was now relieved. However, as Donna said, the treaty of ghent did not mention any of the grievances that led to war. Therefore, nor Britain or the US recieved anything.

1) There are a few reasons why President Madison declared war on Britain. One of the major reasons was that they violated our neutrality law, and seized our U.S. ships.

2. What changes in the Constitution did the Federalists of New England propose?

2) One of the changes was that 2/3 of the houses must agree to a declaration of war before it's official. Another one was that a President can't run for more than two terms, or two sets of 4 years.

3. Did the Treaty of Ghent (1815) solve the problems Madison presented in his war message? If so, how were the problems resolved, and if not, what did the United States actually gain from the war?

3 It solved their problems because the Treaty Of Ghent helped stopped the fighting between Britain & the U.S., ending the war.

1. What reasons did President Madison give Congress for declaring War on Great Britain?

Madison stated that British vessels were continously invading American ships and taking them over. American merchant ships would always be afraid of sailing to the East of America where they had to sail because British ships would violate America's territory and use the sailors for the British navy.

2. What changes in the Constitution did the Federalists of New England propose?

The Federalists tweaked some parts of the Constitution by adding that a president is not allowed to run for more than 2 terms and a president can not be picked from the same state of a preceeding president. They also said that the Congress wouldn't be able to declare wars against other countries without permission from 75% of both Houses. The same concept of 75%'s permission applied also for a state attempting to join the Union.

3. Did the Treaty of Ghent (1815) solve the problems Madison presented in his war message? If so, how were the problems resolved, and if not, what did the United States actually gain from the war?

The Treaty of Ghent solved the problems of the British vessels invading. The problems were solved because the Treaty of Ghent states that everything will go back to where it was and British would respect the American ships and not invade them.

1. What reasons did President Madison give congress for declaring War or great Britain?

President Madison stated that British ships were alwasy capturing American navy ships. He said that since they broke nuetrailty laws, that we needed to also in order to keep the invasion of our ships form happening.

2. What changes in the constitution did the Federalists of new England propose?

They suggested that a president only be allowed to be president for more then 2 terms. They also decided that there could be no wars without two thirds of both houses agreeing with the war.

3. Did the Treaty of Ghent (1815) solve the problems Madison presented in his war message? If so, how were the problems resolved, and if not, what did the United States actually gain from the war?

The Treaty of Ghent basically stated that everything had to go back to the way it was before the war (such as land ownership). It also stopped the fighting, and kept the British form invading our ships again. I would say that this solved the problems that Madison brought up. Since it ended the war and they were no longer enemies (although they weren't really friends) the british and french had no reason to act against his laws. And they all lived happily ever after... :D THE END!

1. What reasons did President Madison give Congress for declaring War on Great Britain?

Since the Embargo Act, British cruisers have been violating the American Flag. This made Britian and the Americans were closer to declaring a war as everr ! Madison was unhappy by the way British was treating America. To protect the citizens, declaring the war was the best thing to do.

2. What changes in the Constitution did the Federalists of New England propose?

Without the agreement of at least two thirds of the house, no new state are allowed to be admited and America can't declare war without permission of at least two thirds of both of the houses. Lastly, a person can't be elected after two terms as president.

3. Did the Treaty of Ghent (1815) solve the problems Madison presented in his war message? If so, how were the problems resolved, and if not, what did the United States actually gain from the war?

I think that the Treaty of Ghent did solve the problem because the treaty of ghent put an end to the War of 1812. This made peace between Britain and the Americans. Also, the British stop violating the Americans.

I didn't see this on the blog yesturday, so i did it today instead:

1. Madison's reasons to declare war on Great Britain were that British cruisers were violating the American flag by causing problems with American sailors and "carrying off" the sailors which was causing their commerce to drop.

2. Some changes the Federalists of New England proposed were that a bew state could not be admitted without at least two thirds of both houses agreeing and Congress could not declare war without at least 2 thirds of both houses agreeing.

3. The Treaty of Ghent did not solve the problems Madison addressed in his war message because although it stopped fighting, left both opponents with no land gains or losses, and recognized the boundary between Canada and the States before the war, the treaty did not adress the issues such as blockades or maritime differences that actually caused the war.
