1. Based on Annals of the Congress of the United States, America’s major complaint against Great Britain was their defiance of basic rights put into place at sea, and addressed how Britain refused to halt their actions - despite being aware of these rights.

2. Congressman Calhoun’s statements in The Debates and Proceedings in the Congress of the United States really supported the anti-British sentiment expressed in the Congressional report on *slide 18*. The Congressional report describes the ways Britain violated the agreements put into place when at sea, and how that was a major complaint of U.S. citizens. Congressman John Calhoun talks about the ‘personal liberties of our citizens’ and says that ‘these rights are being essentially attacked.’ He argued that a nation’s ability to protect the rights of its citizens is what makes it great - and that Britain’s actions are threatening those rights. As a reaction to Britain’s persistent antagonism, Calhoun felt that America had to resist; the nation had to retaliate.

3. Congressman John Randolph believed that America’s personal greed for farmland ― not the protection of people’s rights was what caused the War of 1812. Congressman Randolph believed that the disputes at sea had nothing to do with America’s hunger for a second war with Britain.

4. President Madison declared war during the Annals of Congress in June 1, 1812. Before the start of the war, the American people expressed many sentiments concerning an ongoing conflict between the United States of America. However, these beliefs often contrasted with each other. Some people believed that America should declare war for the continued protection of the rights of the people. However, others people believed that those advocating for the war were only interested in personal gain, and more importantly, Western Expansion. Madison’s beliefs fell into the ideals of protecting the rights of the people. He said that ‘seafaring citizens were the victims of lawless violence’ and felt that a second war with Great Britain was the only way to take back control and give rights back to the people.

5. The Western and Southern states favored war with England in 1812.

6. The New England region opposed war with England in 1812.

7. The information expressed in slides #18, #19, and #21 supported the ideas that Britain was violating the rights of seafaring Americans, and that this was enough grounds for war. However, the data presented in slide #22’s map directly contradicts the idea mentioned above. While the Maritime and Commercial Mid-Atlantic States would theoretically be the most affected by Britain’s actions, they were, as a majority, opposed to the war. This contradicted the information expressed in the other slides, and actually supports the views shown by Congressman John Randolph. It proved that Americans wanted a second war with Great Britain for reasons other than rights for seafaring Americans.

8. The Federalist Party totally opposed the War of 1812.

9. On the other hand, the Democratic-Republicans strongly favored it.

10. President Madison belonged to the Democratic Republican Party.

11. Congressman Hugh Nelson’s letter -written in July, 1812- explained his personal beliefs, demonstrated his reasoning behind voting for the War of 1812. He felt that the war would show America’s ability to unite, writing ‘the people of these states were united, one and indivisible.’ He also wanted to show that the government was actually competent, and to protect the rights of the people. Lastly, he wanted war to ‘repel all foreign aggression’ from the country ― finally ending the attacks on American shipping and sailors which happened many times before the war.

12. The Western and Southern regions supported the reelection of President Madison.

13. The New England region, on the other hand, opposed his reelection.

1.The U.S was mad at Britain for taking their ships and stealing the sailors.
2.He is saying that because of the acts that Britain is doing, like stealing their ships which was mentioned in document 1, that war would be inevitable.
3.He is saying that the only reason they want to go to war is because of their own greed.
4.He is saying that due to the British taking their ships and sailors, which he considered lawless, that they have to go to war.
5.The South, the Western Frontier, and the Agricultural Mid-Atlantic states supported the war.
6.The New England states, and the Commercial Mid-Atlantic states opposed the war.
7. It seems to oppose those documents because many of the people who the documents are from are from the north.
8.The Federalists.
9.The Democratic-Republicans.
10.The Democratic-Republicans
11. He wanted the United States to show that they would not back down, and that they will attack aggression towards them.
12. The South and Vermont.
13. The New England states except for Vermont.

1. That the US did not have rights to use the ocean. England had all of the rights to the ocean and the US felt that they should have at least some rights. Britain was also seizing their ships and sailors.
2. This supports document one because John Calhoun explains how the nation has to help the citizens and keep them safe and free. If the British keep capturing the sailors, America is not protecting its people
3. He felt that Agrarian Cupidity, or the greed for farm land was behind the talk about war with England. Canada was big on the market and both the British and the US wanted it, due to agriculture and economic greed.
4. According to President Madison, the main cause of the War of 1812 was the fact that Britain would seize the American ships and sailors. The British would take the US sailors, sometimes for work and sometimes just to capture them so that made the US mad, especially that they couldn't protect their citizens.

Document 1:

America's major complaint against Great Britain according to this congressional report was the presence of British troops on the colonies, because they were invading America land. Also, Great Britain captured their ships, which they saw as unfair.

Document 2:

This statement by Congressman Calhoun supported Document 1 because he talks about the “personal liberties of our citizens” and that “these tights are being essentially attacked”. To explain, British is threatening America's freedom and rights. So, Calhoun supported America in rebelling.

Document 3:

Congressman Randolph believed that the reasoning behind America going to war was America’s greed for land. This was the wrong reason to go to wrong in his eyes.

Document 4:

The primary reason for the War of 1812 was America’s personal greed. Others thought it was for protecting the rights of American citizens. These two reasons are the more bigger reasons why they went to war.

Document 5:

The regions that favored war with England in 1812 were the western and southern states of America.

The regions that opposed war with England in 1812 was New England, and ,artome and Commercial Mid Atlantic States.

Document 5 seems to contradict Documents 1,2 and 3 because they support different views. Documents 1,2 and 3 showed how Britain was in fact threatening American’s rights. Though, Document 5 shows that many American regions were against the war.

Document 6:

The Federalist party totally opposed the War of 1812.

The Democratic-Republicans partly strongly favored the War of 1812

President Madison’s party was the Democratic- Republic party.
Document 7:

Congressman Nelson gave support for the war of 1812 because he believed this war would bring America together as a nation. He was on the side that this war was to protect the rights of Americans, so he had a more positive view of war.

Document 8:

The regions of our country that supported the reelection of President Madison was the Western and Southern states.

The regions that opposed his reelection was mostly the New England region.

1: America’s major complaint against Great Britain was about America’s freedom of using the sea. Their ships and men were being captured by the British and they were beginning to avoid the seas due to the many attacks. Now, America wants to take back their rights and be able to trade with other countries without being attacked by the British.

2: This statement by Congressman Calhoun supports document one because he talks about defending the people of America from being seized again and being forced to become part of the British navy. He believes the attacks from Britain is an insult to America and wanted to talk back the nation’s rights to use the sea to trade. Congressman Calhoun also states that this was to defend the maritimes and commercial rights.

3: Congressman Randolph really believed that if America went to war with Great Britain it would not be for the sake of defending maritimes rights, but rather because we are giving into the temptation of war. He states that we are being greedy for violence and for land. Also, he defends the North, as they did not support the war with Great Britain.

4: According to President Madison the primary reason for the war was because the British were being unreasonable and was attacking American ships for no reason. He felt that if Great Britain disliked them so much to take away our rights to trade with others he would show the British to respect America as an independent nation. Also, the British were taking men, that being a huge insult to America.

5: The regions that supported the war were the Western frontier, the South, and the Agricultural Mid-Atlantic States.

6: The regions who opposed war were the New England and the Maritime and Commercial Mid-Atlantic States.

7: Document 5 contridicts 1, 2, and 4 because the other documents stated they were fighting the war for maritime and commercial rights. However, the Maritime and Commercial Mid-Atlantic States did not support the war.

8: The party who opposed the war were the Federalist with all forty saying no to the War of 1812.

9: The party that strongly favored the war was the Democratic-Republicans with ninety-eight people saying yes, and only twenty-two saying no.

10: President Madison was part of the Democratic-Republican party as he supported the war against Great Britain.
11: The reason why Congressman Nelson supported the War of 1812 was because he wanted to end, or at least decrease, foreign aggression. He also wanted to show The Republican government was well-suited for America. He wanted to show it could control the people, but also maintain the interests of people.

12: The west and south regions supported President Madison’s reelection.

13: The regions that opposed his reelection was New England except for Vermont.

Document 1: America's greatest complaint against Britain was their violation of US sea rights and impressment of American ships. The British continued to stop US ships in the Atlantic waters, claiming that the US sailors were deserters from the British Royal Navy. This was the main complaint of the Americans that led to the War of 1812.

Document 2: Congressman Calhoun supports this claim by stating how the US needed to protect its rights and honor, and if Britain continued to violate them, they would need to take action. "Protection and Patriotism are reciprocal...if the British persist in such daring insult and injury to the United States, it will be bound in honor and interest to resist.

Document 3: Congressman Randolph believed what was really behind the talk of war with England was "Agrarian cupidity." He believed that was the main cause.

Document 4: The primary reason for the War of 1812 according to President Madison's Declaration of War was the British's persistence in seizing US ships and violating their rights.

Document 5: The Northern/New England States opposed war, while the Western/Southern states supported it. This contradicts previous documents because many Southerners were shown to support the war against the majority, and vice versa.

Document 6: The Federalists totally opposed the war of 1812, while the Democratic-Republicans strongly supported the War of 1812.

Document 7: Congressman Nelson supported the war by stating that the US needs to protect their rights, and that the new country is not easily taken down. "To show that our Republican government was competent to support its rights, to maintain the interests of the people, and to repel all foreign aggression.

Document 8: The Southern and Western states mostly supported the re-election of President Madison, while the Northern/New England states opposed his re-election.

DBQ- Classwork
According to this congressional report, America’s major complaint against Great Britain was that of impressment, in that they complained about Britain taking their rights of freedom of the seas. For instance, Britain captured every American ship, and took their people as slaves. Not only did they use the system of impressment to take people into their navy, but they prevented trade and commerce routes for the Americas
The statement by congressman Calhoun supports document 1 in that it explains how the war would be pursued, if Britain kept depriving America of their liberties. As document 1 states the major complaints of British actions prior to war, document 2 further acknowledges this by sateing Calhoun’s reasons as to why he foresaw the war.
Congressmen Randolph believed the ideas of Agrarian Cupidity were those in which were “really” behind the talk about war with England. He states that rather than maritime rights, Canadian temptation for new land, as well as being “showed” all kingdoms of the earth, will urge the war.
According to the excerpt from Madison’s declaration of war, the primary reason for the war of 1812 was that in which viewed that Britain was at fault by depriving America’s liberties of the sea,in which includes actions like “Wrestled Vessels taken into British Ports”
Regions that favored war with England: The regions that favored war with England were the Western and Southern states in America. A group of Democratic-Republicans called ‘War Hawks’ felt that war was necessary and vocally advocated for it. Most people in these regions shared the beliefs with the political party in question. These regions felt that the war would bring justice and serve as a benefit to the conflicts that they were facing, in which they pursued the war would help. Additionally, those who favored the war with England in 1812 were mostly Anti-Federalists, as the federalists strongly opposed the war.
Regions that opposed war with England:The regions in which opposed the war with England in 1812 were those in which contained federalists. Opposition to the war was common in the U.S, but New England was commonly known as being a major region in which significantly opposed the war. In doing so, controversy over political, economic, and religious issues were those in which were the main reasons several regions opposed. Additionally, the concepts of ideology, opportunism, apathy, and pragmatism were also essential reasons in that justify the resentment and opposition to the war. Significantly, not a single member of the federalist party in congress voted for a declaration of the war. Therefore, regions in which contained federalists and had various viewpoints on controversial issues were those in which opposed the war of 1812.
Document 5 contradicts 1,2,3, and 4 in that instead of negatively exposing Britain for having caused the war, document 5 opposes this by showing a positive favor of the war.
Federalists totally opposed the war. Democratic republicans strongly favored the war. Madison belonged to the Democratic Republican Party.
Congressman Hugh Neslon’s letter -written in July, 1812- explained his personal beliefs, demonstrated his reasoning behind voting for the War of 1812.
The regions of our country that supported the Reelection of President Madison were the Western and Southern Regions..
The regions that opposed his reelection were the New England region.
