Was Jefferson authorized in making the Louisiana Purchase?

No, Jefferson was not authorized in making the Louisiana Purchase. Nowhere in the Constitution did it say he has the right to purchase land. Louisiana had elk, antelope, and deer. At first Jefferson only wanted the New Orleans port for trade. But the Louisiana Purchase gave the U.S. control of the Mississippi River. The land extended the western boundary of the nation to the Rocky Mountains. Not only did this land have an abundance of animals and it doubled the size of the U.S., but it was one of the greatest purchases in the history of the U.S. Napoleon Bonaparte was let Jefferson buy it for ONLY $15 million. That's cheap considering the fact that this land doubled the size of the U.S.

Although, this was an amzing purchase for an extremeley low price, it was still unconstitutional. No branch was given the power to expand the territory. So in conclusion, no Jefferson was not authorized in making the Louisiana Purchase.

Jefferson was not autorized in making the Louisiana Purchase. The Constitution did not say that he had the autority to purchase this large amount of land. None of the brances of the United States government was given the power to expand it's territory. Advatages that the United States would overcome after purchasing it would be the control of the Missisippi River. Jefferson only wanted the New Orleans port for trade at first, but then he realized this. It nearly doubled the size of the U.S. on its West side. It is known to be one the greatest purchases in U.S. history.

I think that Jefferson was not authorized in making the Louisiana Purchase. The Constitution has nothing written about purchasing land from other countries - so being that Jefferson was a Democratic-Republican, he naturally took on a more stricter way of comprehending the Constitution. But when faced with the Louisiana Purchase - a land purchase that was not only extremely cheap (Napoleon needed whatever money he got get in order to continue funding his many wars), but ended up doubling the size of the United States - Jefferson realized that it was too good an opportunity to pass up, and decided to go ahead and buy Louisiana Territory.

No Jefferson was not authorized in making the Louisiana Purchase because the constitution didnt write anything about purchasing land. Also, Jefferson wanted New Orleans, not all of the French territory. The main reason he made the Louisiana purchase was because it would benifit the US. It gave him New Orleans which he wanted, and extra territory. It nearly doubled the size of the United States. The best part was the he got everything for $15 million. However purchasing this it was unconstitutional. With that said Jefferson and the congress over looked the constitution difficulties.

Jefferson was not authorized to make the Louisiana purchase. The constitution did not say anything about not being able to buy land from other nation, that is what made it okay.
Getting all of that land will only make America bigger and stronger. It almost doubled the size of America. It also gave them good trade routes with the Mississippi river. They had also got New Orleans which Thomas Jefferson wanted because it was the most important shipping port. Plus they had a great deal of around 3 cents an acre, it would be very stupid to not agree with that offer.

I think that Jefferson was not authorized in making the Louisiana Purchase because the constitution didnt say anything about purchasing land from other countries. Purchasing Louisiana benifited American in many ways. It gave a trade route, it was a bigger and sronger place, it gave them the Mississippi River which was a way to trade, and New Orleans. Jefferson knew that it was a very good bargin, so he wasnt going to let this one pass. He got the land for very cheap.

Was Jefferson authorized in making the Louisiana Purchase?

I do not believe that Jefferson was authorized in making the purchase of the Louisiana territory. No Ammendment or section in the constitution was there to allow him to do so. The fact that the nation didn't even have enough money made it ridiculous and at the 6% interest it was borrowed from England to pay it only landed the U.S. into more debt. Despite these factors the Louisiana purchase did improve the nation in that it increased it's size and was helping in achieve manifest destiny.

I LEARNED...

- 1796: emerge federalist republican-democratic
- Jefferson canny, cautious
- election not clear that the leaders of the party will be party leaders
- Jefferson had to be loyal to the people
- Adam: not loyal Cabinet
- Adam not a team player not on team Federalist but on team America
- not great diplomatic
- Abigail very strong ideas not afraid to share w/ husband
- French capture ships
- French agents demand bribes before talk to
- Adam cut off trade
- diplomatic relations w/ g.b. and Spain improved w/ France going away.
- new taxes necessary for preperations for war
- imprison aliens or deport if suspicious
- Alien and Sedition Acts from Feds: deport aliens, during war
- state ;egislatures- Republicans want them to get rid of acts
- Adams vs. Jefferson
- N.Y. swing state
- 36th ballot Jefferson won
- reduces justice to one
- Marbury be appointed to office but Jefferson not deliver it
- Marbury trying to get his position
- No we couldn't have commission judiciary act beyongd powers of gov't
- Marshall expand dominion
- Jefferson 2 colleagues: Albert G. and James Madison

THE MAIN POINTS:
There was a lot of betrayal and back-stabbing going on between Spain, France, Britain, America and so many others. Diplomatic relations w/ Britain and Spain were improving. The relationship w/ France was dying. In the early years of Adam's terms France had attacked ships and wanted bribes and money to talk to agents. Adams then cuts off trade w/ them. The Federalists passed Alien and Sedition Acts; allows President to deport or imprison any alien suspicious of aiding the enemy.

No Jefferson wasn't authorized in making the Louisiana Purchase. At first Jefferson only wanted the New Orleans port for trade. No part in the constitution stated that he had the right to. He mainly made the Louisiana purchase because it would double the size of the United States. But the Louisiana purchase had benefited America in many ways. It gave them a trade route & increased the size of the U.S. Thomas Jefferson had gotten a good offer and wouldn't let it pass him.

I feel that Jefferson was authorized in making the Louisiana Purchase. Even though it was not specifically written in the constitution that a president could purchase a large amount of land, it was such a good deal and was so beneficial for America, that it was not worth turning down. The Louisiana Purchase more than doubled the size of the United States. It would not have made sense for Jefferson to turn down this offer considering it was the best real estate deal in history!

Was Jefferson authorized in making the Louisiana Purchase?

Thomas Jefferson was not justified in authorizing the Louisiana Purchase from France in 1803. He was not authorized to purchase the territory because it did not say in the Constitution that Presidents or any other branches of the government had the ability to buy land that will expand the U.S. nation. This situation was not stated in the Constitution, probably because no one thought about this specific subject, or never thought this topic would ever come up in a heated discussion. The purchase of the territory doubled the size of the U.S. nation, and it was also a good bargain. Even though this purchase was a wise decision, it was still unconstitutional, so Jefferson was not authorized in making the purchase of the Louisiana territory.

I dont think that Jefferson was authorized to make the Louisiana Purchase. Louisiana was wanted for a long time because of its animals for hunting and for its coast line. We bought it because it was a very good price in fact we bought it for fiveteen million dollars. We had control over alot of land including the Mississippi river. It expanded our countries sise and therefore gave us more power. Jefferson was not authorised to make the Louisianna Purchase because it was considered unconstitutional to expand the size of your country.

Was Jefferson authorized in making the Louisiana Purchase?

Yes, because the constitution doesnt say that it is wrong to do it. Since Jefferson did only want to get NEW ORLEANS he thought that he should get all the land with it. Louisiana doubled the Americas size. It cost only 15$ MILLION. Thats cheap so i say yes

I learned about the louisianna purchase and how Louis andClark explored the landwith sacajaweah. I learned how Napolean sold the Louisianna territory for fiveteen million dollars and Jefferson took it even thou it was unconstitutional to buy more territory. He bougt it for the animals and for the coast line. We now had possesion of the mississippi river so we had an advantage for boats and shipping good.

Was Jefferson authorized in making the Louisiana Purchase?

Yes, Jefferson was authorized to make the Louisiana Purchase. His responsibility as president was to do what was best for the country and in this case it meant going against the Constitution and going with his gut. In the end Jefferson got more than he bargained for. He had originally asked only for French controlled New Orleans but since France needed the money they sold the Louisiana territory as well. Jefferson paid only $15 million which was about 3 cents per acre. The Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of the U.S. and when explored by Lewis and Clark new species of plants and animals were discovered. I strongly believe that Jefferson made the right decision because this deal was too good to pass up.

Was Jefferson authorized in making the Lousinana Purchase?

I think that jefferson was not authorized in making the lousinana purchase because in the constitution it doesn't say that he can purchase lands. In the begining i think jefferson had his doubts about the louisana purchase but, he did it anyway because it was such a good deal and he couldn't turn it down. Even though jefferson wasn't authorized i think it was still a good decsion because it doubled the size of the U.S.,(for $15 million) and they discovred many new things on the land.

Was Jefferson authorized in making the Louisiana Purchase?

No Thomas Jefferson was not authorized in making the lousiana purchase because no where in the constitution did it say that the government had the power under the constitution to expand territory. Though, it was overlooked because the purchase was justified since it did relieve tensions between American and France. It also doubled the size of the country. So though Jefferson was not authorized to make such a decision, though he got away with it because of how it benefited america with trade routes and expansion.

Was Jefferson authorizer to make the louisiana purchase. No. Do i think that it was a good idea. Yes.

Jefferson had no authority to buy louisiana from the french. He when behind the constitution and congress allowed it. I feel that something as big as this should have been discussed more. Jefferson also when behind the Feds. back. Even though he did not agree with there methods and so on, this is a matter that should have been discussed throughout all the branches. Even though Jefferson had no authority to have done this, i think that in the end it was a good idea. It was just a bad way of getting there

Was Jefferson authorized in making the Louisiana Purchase?

Thought purchasing Louisiana went against the constitution because it didnt give Jefferson the power to expand, nothing about purchasing land was stated in the consitution. He only did so for the benefit of the nation. And even though Jefferson was in need to borrow money, the offer was too good to give up because of how cheap it was. Which paid off in the end. And if Louisiana wasnt purchased Europes restrictions to United States trade in the Mississippi River would of hurt the United States shippings.

The success of the US navy in the fight for Canada was terrible at first. They lacked a good strategy and enthusiasm. Their generals were old and senile. The army in general had no tactics and were scattered about. The British had captured Fort Michilimackinac. But when the Americans battled on sea w/ their general Oliver Perry, they captured a British fleet and General William Harrison had beat the British at the Battle of Thames. These victories really boost America's spirits and on September 11, 1814, Captain Thomas challenged the British and won. They made the British troops retreat.

Yes, because they beat the British fleet when they arrived in Baltimore. When they threatened New Orleans, Andrew Jackson had 7,000 sailors, regulars, pirates, Frenchmen, and militiamen from Louisiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee attack the overconfident Brits. The Brits poor attacks caused them to lose men and injury many.

The Treaty of Ghent was not advantageous to the United States. The Treaty basically said they would stop fighting and give back whatever land or territory they took from each other. Nowhere was it mentioned that the British attacked their ships, seized and search, impressments or confiscations.

The Hartford Convention 'killed' the Federalist party. Their last presidential candidate was James Monroe. They were less radical and they had demanded financial assistance from Washington to make up for lost trade. They also wanted to limit the President to a single term and prohibit the election of two consecutive presidents from the same state. And they wanted Congress to require a two thirds vote before an embargo can be imposed.

Approximately 6000 Americans were killed or wounded. The Federalist party died and war heroes like Andrew Jackson were born. Because of the British blockade manufacturing prospered.

A new sense of nationalism arose as America became one nation. Writers like Washington Irving and James Cooper received international recognition in the 1820s for their use of American themes and scenes. Textbooks for school, which were British in the earlier era, were now rewritten by Americans for Americans. The magazine North American Review began publication in the year 1815--- the year they triumphed at New Orleans. American painters showed their nationalism by painting American landscape.

The Tariff of 1816, put a 20-25% tax on dutiable imports. Henry Clay created the American System:
o The system began with a strong banking system.
o It advocated a protective tariff behind which eastern manufacturing would flourish.
o It also included a network of roads and canals, especially in the burgeoning Ohio Valley, to be funded for by the tariffs, and through which would flow foodstuffs and raw materials from the South and West to the North and East.
o Lack of effective transportation had been one of the problems of the War of 1812, especially in the West, and in 1817, Congress sought to distribute $1.5 million to the states for internal improvements, but Madison vetoed it, saying it was unconstitutional, thus making the states look for their own money to build the badly needed roads. Was Thomas Jefferson justified in authorizing the purchase of Louisiana from France in 1803?

Yes Jefferson was justified in authorizing the purchase of Louisiana from France in 1803, just on the simple fact that if it weren't bought, Napoleon would have succeeded with his North American French Empire, which would have probably ended in the destruction of the United States. Though it was not directly stated in the Constitution about purchasing land, but to establish western frontier states like Kentucky as part of the U.S., I think it was necessary to buy the land.

LOUISIANNA PURCHASE:

I Learned...
- Jefferson dreamed of republic free farmers
- a little manufacturing
- we got a third of the continent
- east of appalachain during revolution abolish slavery
- little slavery in Louisianna
- we might not have civil war if they out a stop to the little slavery there.
- because of the louisianna purchase slavery spread

Main Ideas...
Basically, it was about how people who choose a public life did this because they wanted to make a difference. In Jefferson's case it was to have free, independent republic farmers. When he purchased Louisianna he ended up spread slavery out to the west and south. This ultimately caused the Civil War.

Yes i feel that Jefferson was authorized in making the Louisiana purchase. Looking over the fact that Jefferson contradicted his own expressed belief of the constitution, the fact that he took a strict look to the constitution and it said nothing as to purchasing territory as such, Jefferson, in my opinion did the right thing. In all truth, you will not be able to stick not doing everything that is not in the constitution and do everything that is. Sometimes you have to take a loose interpretation of the constitution to get great out comes for a growing nation and sometimes you need strict interpretations. So even though he had a strict view of the constitution, sometimes, in my view, it should be ok to take a loose interpretation depending on it's benifit. The effect of the Louisiana purchase brought good things for America. America more than doubled in size because of Louisiana. The purchase of Louisiana were practically the stepping stones as to what made America a super power later on.
