Here are your HW assignments for the upcoming week. Even though we will not be meeting for class on Thursday and Friday, we must stay on pace, and keep up with our readings.

1. John Adam's victory was unusual because he did not win the majority of popular votes or electoral votes like Jackson did.

2. Adams was not suited to be president because he wasn't elected by the people and he was supported by John C. Clay a former candidate, gambler, and dueler who also wasn't fit for presidency. Adams was elected unjustly.

3. The Republicans divided themselves into two parties; The National Republicans who supported Adams while the Democrat Republicans supported Jackson. The Adamites rallied together and chanted "Huzza for Jackson" while the Democrats adopted the oak as their emblem to represent their independence.

4. Andrew Jackson represented and protected democracy the very foundation which America stands upon.

5. General Tariffs and additional tariffs on wool led to these abominations. These tariffs angered the south because southerners felt discriminated against because they lacked industry.

6. The nullification crisis consisted of the southern states attempting to gain power by being independent states with various pacts and acts.

9. I agree with the title "Czar Nicholas I" because a czar has absolute power and he nearly had absolute power of the American Bank.

10. For the first time a third party entered the election called the Anti-Masonic party. Also was the calling of the national nominating convention.

14. Van Buren was unpopular due to all the troubles he inherited from his predescessor. He had little control over the country with riots breaking out along northern borders causing panic and was against slavery.

15. Extensive loans, failures in wheat crops, and Jacksonian establishments such as the Bank war caused the Great Panic. Whigs called for expansion packs to aide in the faltering economy.

16. Texas was so popular because there was vast lands to be owned.

19. This election showed that voters were easily manipulated by the Whigs and not very loyal.

20. Democrats emphasized the liberty of an individual, state rights, and federal restraints socially and economically as their fundamental doctrines.

1. What were settlers of the frontier like? They didn’t like that there were Indians there, that’s why they made the Indian removal act.
2. "The westward movement also molded the physical environment." Explain. It was a long way and many people died on the trail.


3. How and why did American demographics change from 1820 to 1860? Andrew Jackson started Democracy.




4. After reading this section, does it seem logical or unbelievable that an Irish-American became president in 1960? Explain. No because past the 1960s racism had already ended and it didn’t matter what your backround was from it is about where you live





5. Did the Germans make as large a contribution to America as the Irish did? Explain. No Germans didn’t involve with trade as the Irish did.





6. Why were immigrants from Germany and Ireland feared and hated? I think they were hated because they were importing a lot of material using us to bring them up.





8. What barriers stood in the way of the industrial Revolution in the United States?

Explain. The south was more of a cotton growing region than the north so they needed the cotton gin more than the north.

10. Which were more important in Antebellum America, new inventions or changes in business forms and legal status? Explain.

11. What demands did labor have in the 1830's and 1840's? More supplies to produce goods.





12. What types of work were done by women in Antebellum America? (Be careful on this one.) clothes making,



13. What factors led to increased productivity for farmers? The invention of the Tractor by John Deere


14. Why were turnpikes and steamboats important? It made trade and transportation easier.





15. The Erie Canal brought revolutionary change to two regions. Explain.





16. Name some of the advantages and disadvantages of early railroads. Advantages was sped and amount of cargo that can be transported, disadvantages were the costs to maintain the trains.





17. The clipper ship, stagecoach and Pony Express ultimately failed because they were not forward looking. Explain.
