- Careers: preacher, teacher, tax collector, privateer, shopkeeper, laborer, corset maker (like his father)
- Benjamin Franklin encouraged him to come to America.
- Offered editor in Pennsylvania Magazine
- Jan 1776, Common Sense
- 50 page phamplet- for making of change in nation, democratic government
- He loved America
- Moves toward common people, dream and vision for successful nation
- John Adams didn't like him
- Upper class patriots didn't like him
- Fearful of his call for independence and democracy

- The Age of Reason--> follow science and natural philosphy
- Radical democratic and religious person
- Jefferson and Paine good friends in Paris
- 1809 death age 72
- Not universally loved

THE MAIN POINTS...
A lot of background information about Thomas Paine was given He was born in the year 1737 and died in 1809 at the age of 72. His mother was a religous Anglo who often taught him about the bible. His father the corset maker, was a Quaker. They also talked about how he had many other careers before being a Radical Democrat. He was a tax collector, a shopkeeper, corset maker, privateer, laborer, preacher and teacher. He was also fired from the government and had two wives. Paine was a shining example of the common people. He was frowned upon by upper class Republicans because of his working background. They were fearful of his ideas of independence and democracy. He was a real RAdical Democratic who believed in great success for America, the land he loved.

WHAT I LEARNED AND DID NOT KNOW...
- Prominent group that supported revolution was merchants
- Britain unaware of growth in ideology. It was more than just a bunch of angry colonists.
- Paine said monarchy is ridiculous why should the idiot son of someone else rule us?
- Absurd that an island should govern a continent.
- Benjamin Franklin's hat example, telling Jefferson to calm down
- a year and a half to draft it so it can be approved by congress
- debates about taxation and war as America realizes this would be the first time they'd be independent
- some argued that their state is bigger
- paid better wages than redcoats
- the war is being fought by the least advantage who want property, freedom and rights, that's what their fighting for and those are the type of people who got recruited.
- Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys were fighting NOT for the crown but against New York
- Grren Montain boys agredd to help the Patriotic cause
- the war was not to wipe out the nation but to break up "these pockets of resistance"
- common misunderstanding
- continental army not as professional and well-trained as the redcoats
- George Washington kept his "scattered army" together
- Ben Frank.'s daughter SAlly was driven out of Philadelphia to Paris by the BRitish
- She wrote a letter to her father asking for linen and he wrote " a caustic letter" saying hiw dare she ask for those things when necesities are scarce. It was like someone put salt on his strawberries...
- populations suffered with little or no food. mostly wives who husbands were inthe war. hard time making ends meet.
- Lexington and COncord are victories that make the continent ehnthusiastic
- Victory at Yorktown was a French- American win
- The British fighting five types of war in the 1770s only lost one
- There was a difference between sending British troops to another country to fight but to fight British America had it's limitaions.
- British constantly looking over their shoulder afraid the FRench would jump in.
- The other countries (i.e. France) didn't join exactly to help America but more because of their resentment towards Britain

THE MAIN POINTS:
The video focuses on the events that resulted in the Revolutionary War. It mentions Americas victories and triumphs. It shows the struggle of the common people and how during the war necesities were scarce and wives with husbands in the war struggled to make ends meet. In the video, Benjamin Franklin's daughter Sally wrote him a letter saying how the British forced her out her home in Philadelphia and she moved to Paris. She asked him for some linen and feathers and he wrote back "the most caustic letter,". "I am horrified to recieve a letter from you asking for finery during the war. It's almost as if someone had out sal ton my strawberries. The taste is so wrong,". She replied saying like her linen her patience is all worn out. This was an example or more like a representation of how communities during the war struggled with little or no food. Somne without basic supplies.

I thought it ws interesting how he was hated by Thomas Jefferson. I thought it was interesting that his pamplet sold millions. I thought it was interesting that he came to america due to benjamin franklin.

Andrew Kim said...

-not born in America
-Jefferson Memorial has 6 errors in Declaration of Independence
-Paine arrived in 1774
-Born in 1737
-Father Quaker, Mother Anglican
-Was a privateer, school teacher, tax collector, preacher, etc..
-editor after arriving in a week
-turned that company in to the most powerful company in just few monthes.
-common sense called for indpendence, making of a nation state unprecedented in modern history. also, made the nation state model to the world, asylum to the liberty lovers
-Benjamin Franklin brought him to America
-John Adams and the patriots were against him because he worked for independenceand democracy.
-invented social security system
-dies in 1809

the main idea of the whole file is how Paine had a menial background, but came to America, eventually leading the whole country towards independence

Jefferson and Paine were good friends.

Jan 1776 Paine writes Common Sense
It was a 50 page pamphlet telling America to stop pretending to be loyal to Britain because Britain was tiny and America was gigantic

Main Points:
Thomas Paine wrote Common Sense to show colonists it was common sense to go at war with Britain because America is bigger than Britain. Thomas Paine himself was not born in America, he was fired from the government, he was not liked by John Adams and many other people because he had a working background. He encouraged the colonies to become independent.

Unfinished Nation: Not Much of a War

WHAT I LEARNED:
- Americans began to grow aware of the disputes between Britain and the colonies.
-Tobacco planters were in great debt.
-Merchants were active supporters in the revolution.
-Americans thought that they were going to lose the war.
-Thomas Jefferson also wrote a pamphlet stating reasons that America should rebel against Britain.
-Members of the Congress weren't focusing on America as a whole, just as separate states.
-There were fights within colonies pitting colonists against each other based on political beliefs and their loyalty to Britain.
-Americans were paid better wages than Redcoats.
-The boundary between New Hampshire and New York was altered by a greedy governor.
-The economy began to deteriorate.

QUESTIONS
1. Why were merchants one of the biggest supporters of the revolution?
2. Why did people without property or money decide to enlist in the Continental Army?
3. What was the difference - or differences - in the military strategies implemented by the Redcoats and Continental Army?
4. What did Benjamin Franklin's daughter mean when she said, "My patience, like my linen, is all worn out." after he denies her request for new clothes?
5. What would've happened had America not received assistance from France and other countries?

Andrew Kim said...

Americans thought they would lose the war
Thomas Jefferson started almost a petition that america should rebel against Britain.
Britain was not recognizant of the ideology. Even when they heard about it, they thought it was just a bunch of ideosyncrasies.
colonists get paid better than redcoats.
the war was fought by those who had the least wealth.
the war was not to obliterate the nation but to disperse the rebellion.
American wins the Lexington and Concord, and the Yorktown war.
the other countries that joined America was not to help America but to get vengeance against the british.

1) who supported the American Revolution the most?
2) how explicitly did Thomas Jefferson help fight the war?
3) would America have won if other countries had come to help?
4) why did other countries help America?
5) were they really helping America?
