The program examines the origins and achievements of the early civil rights movement, focusing on the impact of landmark Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, and also highlighting the significance of Martin Luther King Jr., the NAACP, chief justice Earl Warren, Rosa Parks, the 1957 Civil Rights Act, the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and the tactic of civil disobedience. The Unfinished Nation: A Nation Torn

Depicts domestic and international affairs that transpired during the 1960s. Beginning with the presidency of John F. Kennedy, the program examines the factors involved in the Cuban Missile Crisis, including Cuban exiles landing at the Bay of Pigs, the leadership of Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev, the threat of nuclear weapons, and the conflict over Berlin. The program examines the Vietnam War under the leadership of Kennedy and Johnson, covering such topics as the leadership of Ngo Dinh Diem, the division at the seventeenth parallel, the demonstrations in Saigon, the efforts of U.S. ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge Jr., the Gulf of Tonkin incident, and the Tet offensive. Illustrating the wedge created between the American people and their government as shown through student antiwar demonstrations and draft avoidance, the presentation notes how the final years of the 1960s brought about major riots, violence, and racial tensions that resulted in the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr., and Bobby Kennedy. National guard troops deployed to protect the White House and the outbreak of violence at the Democratic National Convention held in Chicago are two major events probed in particular

The Unfinished Nation: The Way We Were?

Profiles American society during the 1950s, beginning with Edmund Teller’s creation of the hydrogen bomb and the ushering in of the atomic age and the implications of America's emerging middle class. Considering the unattainable images of success in the “American Dream,” an ideology consuming the nation during the post–World War Two era, the program looks at the rise of consumerism and the growing popularity of television and automobiles, then exposes the realities of poverty rampant among African Americans and other minority groups. The documentary measures the international relations between the United States and Britain, notably with Winston Churchill, as well as with the Soviet Union during the early days of the cold war. With Sputnik, the space race, and nuclear arms appropriation, America found itself challenged to grow as an economic and political superpower. Play

The 1950s were very prosperous. War ends 1945. Big economic boom is caused by other nations being destroyed. America wants a free-enterprise system. US is only state which can supply reconstruction. Consumers throughout the 40s were saving after the war they spent what they had saved. The government became a very big investor in American spending for things such as housing and highways. The GI bill provides benefits for soldiers after the war. Economic growth out paces population growth 10 to 1. The west is changed vastly. From low population and agriculture to boomed population and more industrialized. The sunbelt industries expand. The government expended funds to create airports and a national highway. Industrialized workplaces offer much higher pay in exchange for no striking. The AFL and CIO came together in the 50s. Science and Technological breakthroughs occur in the 50s to 60s. More for military us than anything else. The Blacks and Whites are thickly segregated in suburbs and schooling in the 50s to 60s. Women's participation in the workforce increases. There are "Women's Jobs" are underpaid. Men were presented with images of success such as a good father, athlete, and soldier. Television is also profound in the 50s. The programming presents an image of American Suburban life.

The 60s begins with the election and assassination of JFK. The cold War was a "War of Words" and fought through proxies. JFK was a realist in foreign policy and idealist in domestic policy. American National security interests through things such as the peace core will increase international relations. The Bay of Pigs invasion fails in Cuba. Nikita Khrushchev the Russians would make a peace treaty with East Germany. The Cuban Missile crisis arises and Cuba is fully blockaded by the US and the USSR takes down their missiles. Kennedy says the crisis in Cuba was about Berlin. Johnson was embroiled in Vietnam after JFK dies. Ho Chi Minh first declares war on French and French Rule in Vietnam. The divided Vietnam at the 17th parallel. Elections were to be established in 2 years. The American mission was to train the south Vietnamese to defend and fight for themselves. In '65 Johnson tries to make the Vietnam War an American War. The North sent infantry to south Vietnam.
