1. According to Zinn, what is his main purpose for writing A People’s History of the United States?
- Zinn's is trying to tell his readers the facts and the truth even though it is harsh and cruel. He is giving the readers a message that his approach is not to put readers against the past, but to accept it because it cannot be changed. Zinn tries to bring out the positive part of the truth.


2. According to Zinn, how is Columbus portrayed in traditional history books?
- According to Zinn, Columbus is portrayed in traditional history books as a man who would do anything for gold and to please the king. He put countless people to death in order to get what he wants.


3. What is Zinn’s basic criticism of historian Samuel Eliot Morison’s book,
Christopher Columbus, Mariner?
- Zinn's basic criticism of historian Samuel Eliot Morison's book, Christopher Columbus, Mariner was the way Samuel Eliot mapped. Zinn says that his argument cannot be against selection, simplification or emphasis. He says his argument was about the map makers distortion.


4. What major issues does Bartolome de las Casas bring up regarding Spanish expeditions in the Caribbean?
- Bartolome de las Cases brings up the issue that cruelty to the Native Americans. He said that, the Spaniards "thought nothing of knifing the Indians by tens and twenties and of cutting slices off them to test the sharpness of their blades."


5. Identify one early and one subsequent motive that drove Columbus to oppress indigenous peoples.
- Gold was a sign of wealth. That's why Columbus wanted to find as much gold as he can, and he also wanted to find a shorter route to India. He kept the Arawak Indians as prisoners because he felt strongly that they could lead him to the gold.


6. What was the ultimate fate of the Arawak Indians?
- Columbus found the Arawak Indians and kept them as prisoners in the ship because he insisted they would lead him to a source of gold. Most of the Arawak Indians died on the ship because of the cold. Two Arawak Indians were stabbed with swords and bled to death because they didn't trade enough swords as Christopher Columbus wanted. Many more were killed after Columbus promised the king gold and slaves. The Arawak Indians were given impossible tasks and as punishment for not completing them, they were killed until eventually none were left.


7. Write down the five most important things Zinn says about Columbus (include page numbers).
Write down the two most important things Zinn says about the writing of history.

1. "he was so anxious to please the King that he committed irreparable crimes against the Indians..." (PAGE 9)

2.The information Christopher Columbus wanted to know the most was WHERE WAS THE GOLD. (PAGE 4)

3. He went Island to Island taking Indians as captives. (PAGE 6)

4. Columbus did the same thing to the Arawaks of the Bahamas that Cortex did to the Aztecs of Mexico. (PAGE 12)

5. He says that besides all Columbus did, he was still a hero. (PAGE 10)

(second part)
1. Instead of lying to cover up the past, he says its better to tell the facts and the truth even though it isn't always pleasant.
2. Bring out the positive sides of the truth.
