Tonight's HW

Hello, APUSHers:

Here is tonight's HW. The rest of the assignments for the week will be posted shortly.

1. Find a copy of the Declaration of Independence, either in your textbook or online.
2. From the List of Grievances, select five reasons Jefferson and the Second Continental Congress gave to justify breaking away from Great Britain. For each reason, list the specific action on the part of Parliament or the King that prompted the complaint.

Here is an Example to help you:

Complaint: For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies

Specific Action: This complaint is a reference to the Quebec Act. The act expanded Quebec into the Ohio River Valley and provided for a system of justice that resembled the French judicial program. The French did not have a history of trial by jury, and this right was not included in the Quebec Act. News of the Quebec Act arrived in America at the same time as word of the Coercive/Intolerable Acts. The British colonists feared that their right to trial by jury, guaranteed in the English constitution, would also soon be taken from them.
